Welcome to Kirrit Barreet Aboriginal Art and Cultural Centre.
The Kirrit Barreet Aboriginal Art and Cultural Centre was established in 2005 for the Aboriginal Community of Ballarat. Kirrit Barreet means 'place of creation' which is where the great ancestor spirit known as Bunjil, the eagle-hawk created the Aboriginal People out of clay.
Living History Museum
The museum displays information about Aboriginal Australia, Koori people and the Wathaurong tribe, as well as displays of traditional artefacts, and view interactive shows on Aboriginal culture. At Kirrit Barreet we exhibit high quality local and regional contemporary and Aboriginal arts and craft.
Gift Shop
We also have a gift shop where you can purchase high quality and authentic artefacts, jewellery, clothing, ceramic/glass bowls and books selling educational children's and informative books as well as CD's and DVD's.
Functions / Conference
A multi-purpose function centre is also available for meetings or workshops. A tour of the centre can also be arranged.
Cultural Tours
Our education programs are run by Aboriginal people who can provide visitors with many interesting facts about the traditional and contemporary way of life of the Victorian Aboriginal people. We can conduct tours for schools, Universities, business groups and tour companies etc.
Exhibitions
Kirrit Barreet gallery showcases Indigenous art and crafts from local and Victorian artists. The majority of exhibitions contain works that are for sale
Entry to the centre is free and is open 9am-5pm weekdays
