


At Kirrit Barreet Aboriginal Art and Cultural Centre we have a lively education program run by Aboriginal people who can provide students with information about the local area, the tools and implements that were used with many interesting facts about the traditional and contemporary way of life of the Victorian Aboriginal people. Boomerang painting can also be incorporated giving students an insight into the Aboriginal Art and ways of communicating in signs and symbols. Participation in our workshops will support VELS learning requirements.
Aboriginal Cultural Education Programs
Cultural talk
You will be taken on a journey which starts with a welcome to the centre, a brief history of the centre as well as our gallery space and shop then a walk through our permanent exhibition which students can discover many facts from our time lines of Ballarat, Wathaurong, Kulin, Koori, and Australian Aboriginal. Students will also be told about first contact with white people and what impact they had on Aboriginal people, which will include missions and reserves, the stolen generation, and the impact of the gold rush. We also have outside, a replica of Lal Lal falls (Lal Lal meaning falling water) which is said to have been created by Bunjil to rest after creating the land and people. Artefact talk
Our education room contains a large collection of artefacts. The students will be shown the uses of many tools and weapons that were used by the men and women students will then be shown how a didgeridoo is made followed by a didgeridoo demonstration. Students may be asked to participate in the demonstrations.
